Of all the social issues that have consistently been on the top priority list of our country, education of girls and women is, without any doubt, one of the most important one. The lacklustre scenario in this regard is primarily due to the ignorance of a large section of people about the necessity of educating them. A strong reservation against sending girls to co-ed schools and colleges also contributes significantly to paralysing them intellectually, emotionally and, of course, financially. This is where lies the indispensability of setting up separate educational institutions for girls. Raniganj Girls' College was the fruit of this social awareness on the part of some visionary people of Raniganj. They not only ran from pillar to post, but also came up with generous financial support to help the college see the light of the day. Established in 1980, the college has gradually turned into an important centre of learning for the girls of Raniganj as well as for those coming from different places of Paschim Bardhaman and its adjoining districts in West Bengal. The college that, at the time of its inception, carried out its academic affairs at the campus of Gandhi Memorial Girls' High School with Pass courses for Undergraduate students in a handful of subjects and an H.S. section before moving to Jamunamoyee Girls' High School now boasts of a lush green campus of 6.258 acres at Searsole, Raniganj to run Undergraduate courses with Honours in as many as 23 subjects from Arts, Performing Arts, Science and Commerce streams, Post Graduate course in Urdu and Programme courses in 27 subjects. Apart from catering to the academic interests of thousands of girls in its journey spanning four decades, the college has also endeavoured to instill into their minds values that will help them serve the humanity at large. With the blessings and co-operation of all, the college aims to further improve itself in every respect without compromising its principles.
