Department of Political Science

RaniganjGirls’ College is one of the two Girls’ college in the Asansol sub-divisionof  the district of paschim Bardwan ofWest Bengal. The Importance of the college can be understood if we keep in mindthe fact that the percentage of female literacy in the Asansol Sub-division ishigher than the district itself and also the state as per the 2011 census. TheRaniganj Girls’ college was the product of the farsightedness of somerespectable persons of Raniganj who could foresee the need for a Girls’ Collegeand the people of Raniganj lost  no timeto come forward to help in whatever way the they in making their dream cometrue .And it was no other person than the Higher Education Minister, ShriShambhu Ghosh who laid the foundation stone of the college on 9thNovember,1978. The college had to start its journey from a school named`GandhiMemorial Girls’ School in the morning shift from 1980-81 academic session withjust 18 students . Things started looking up somewhat from the academic session1981-1982 with 124 students getting admitted to the H . S.(ARTS) stream and 16to the B.A.(PASS) course. This increase in number of students necessitated morespace and the college had to shift again to another school named`JamunamoyeeGirls’ School in January 1982. And finally, the college found its permanentaddress in the place where it now stands near Searsole Rajbari. The Departmentof political science of the college can be said to be as old as the collegeitself because of the fact that the first subject affiliation of the college, granted by the University of Burdwan ,included Political Science . TheDepartment  started only  with one full time teaching post which wascreated by a G. O.101-End(CS)/4C-46/79 dated 28.01.1980 .Smt.
