The famous French sociologist, Pierre Bourdiecommented, “The function of sociology, as of every science, is to reveal thatwhich is hidden”. The Department of Sociology commenced its journey in RaniganjGirls’ College from the academic session 2016-2017.The department offers a sixsemester undergraduate BA Program course under the CBCS pattern. In addition tothis Generic Elective Courses are also offered in the fifth and sixth semestersof the undergraduate program for the students pursuing Program courses insubjects other than Sociology.

The aim of the department is to inculcate in thestudents a vivid understanding of society, patterns of social relationships, natureof social transactions and human social behavior in social contexts. The twoteachers of the department try their best to promote critical thinking amongits students by encouraging them to participate in seminars, inter-disciplinaryacademic events and co-curricular activities.
