TheDepartment of Geography of Raniganj Girls’ College was established in theacademic session 2008-2009.During the first four years, the department offered the subject only as an optional subject (General subject) to the undergraduatestudents. Due to the high demand of the subject among the girl students of thisregion the department decided to open its honours course simultaneously. Thedepartment has received the approval to run the honours course since the academic year 2012-2013. Since then, the department has witnessed increasing number of studentswith each passing year, both in the Honours and General courses.Semester system has beenintroduced from the academic session 2016-17. Three-Year Degree Course (bothhonours and program) are based on Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) of KaziNazrul University from session 2016-17. Presently Learning Outcome BasedCurriculum Framework (LOCF) under CBCS is effective from session 2020-21.

The Department aims at empowering the girls’students of the mining-industrial region. The department with its dedicatedfaculties aims to develop a strong base of geographical knowledge. Thedepartment aims to provide higher and quality education to the students. Italso aims to cater to the growing demands of geographical education to the girlstudents. The philosophy and methodology of the subject is discussed in such away that students develop a keen interest in the subject and pursue it forhigher studies. The department provides basic instruments for practical works. The department arranges field trips, exhibitions and bringsout wall magazine. The CBCS syllabus and the LOCF syllabus under CBCS are very enrichedand updated which will help in academic progress.
