The Department of Urdu, Raniganj Girls’College was established in 2008, is recognized as one of the most prestigious departments offering Undergraduate, Postgraduate and PhD courses to students.The Department has been offering General Degree Course from the academic session 2008-2009 and B.A Honours in Urdu from the academic session 2009-2010.The department started imparting undergraduate courses under the Choice Based Credit System from the academic session 2016-17.It also started offering Post Graduate Programme in Urdu from the academic session 2018-2019. Recently, the department was granted recognition to pursue PhD programme in Urdu by Kazi Nazrul University.

The department actively engages in teaching culturally rich Urdu prose, poetry and other genres of creative writing to its students. Apart from teaching the faculty members of the department also engage themselves in organizing seminars, workshops, exhibition and educational tours for the students to inculcate research oriented critical thinking .The department has its own seminar library for the students to borrow books as per their requirement. The seminar library is well equipped with more than two hundred text and reference books for the students and the teachers to borrow. A periodical wall magazine is also published by the Department of Urdu where the students of the college showcase their writings and other forms of creative art. The vision of the Department is to move towards excellence in higher education of Urdu by producing a bunch of dedicated, skilled and knowledgeable empowered women well trained in the Urdu culture and literary tradition.
